Dialogue between Secretary-general of China-Africa Industrial Forum Cheng Zhigang and Langa, South Africa's ambassador to China

On June 24, 2011, Secretary-general Cheng Zhigang of China Africa Industrial Forum went to Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in China and had a in-depth talk with South Africa’s Ambassador Langa.

Secretary-general: By the end of Nov.2010, CAIF had held the “2010 African Energy and Mineral Seminar.” Now we had many Chinese enterprises who want to import resources especially coal from your country. What is the energy and mineral investment situation now in South Africa, what is your advice for Chinese investors in this field?

Ambassador: South Africa has rich mineral resources. It is the world's largest producer and exporter of platinum; is a significant producer of gold, manganese, chrome, vanadium, and titanium; and also exports a significant amount of coal. In addition, it has major deposits of antimony, coal, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates, tin, uranium, diamonds, copper and vanadium.

South Africa is known for its sound and prudent macro-economic policies, strong legal, banking and financial system. The country’s sound macroeconomic management is by and large responsible for mitigating the most negative effects of the world economic crisis on the South African economy. The sustained macroeconomic programme pursued by Government has delivered lower taxes, yet higher tax revenues, lower interest rates, lower inflation and a relatively strong and stable currency.

The country has highly developed physical infrastructure, modern telecommunications systems and a vibrant banking sector. This considerably reduces the cost and ease of doing business and offers a favorable investment environment. Doing business in South Africa is much the same as doing business anywhere in the developed world.

From a business tourism perspective, there are a number of excellent hotels, including 6* hotels, as well as first-class business facilities and telecommunications infrastructure. It also features excellent conferencing facilities across the country. In 2008, the Cape Town International Convention Centre overtook New York as the most popular convention city for long haul conference goers worldwide.
